Battle regains momentum as floods subside in Kilinochchi
December 3, 2008 1:17 PM

Army 57 Division (57 Div) and Task Force 1 (TF 1) soldiers who have been lined up themselves along the western and southern boundaries of the Kilinochchi town yesterday (Dec 2) started pushing their forward boundaries further in to the town area. Army's march towards the LTTE's once administrative hub and symbolically vital town has been slow down by the torrential rains and resultant floods in the area during last two weeks.

According to the defence sources in the battlefield, heavy clashes were reported in the south of Adampan area since last morning, as 57 Div soldiers ran at the LTTE bunkers.

In one of the several clashes occurred in the area, troops destroyed an LTTE bunker and claimed heavy damages to the terrorists. In a separate incident, troops found a body of a slain LTTE cadre along with one T-56 riffle during the subsequent search.

Meanwhile, TF1 troops operating in the Nivil area, west of Paranthan confronted with an LTTE group last evening. Troops claimed heavy damages to the terrorists. Also, snipers deployed in the forward areas reported shooting down of one LTTE cadre in the same evening.

Separate from the Wanni theatre, troops deployed in the Muhamalai forward defence, in Jaffna theatre , reported shooting down of 2 LTTE cadres during morning hours.

The progress of the ongoing counter terrorists operations remained unchecked by the monsoon rains as highly motivated Sri Lanka Army soldiers took up the challenge. Some self claimed defence experts hoped Sri Lanka Army would encounter  a similar situation once faced by Napoleon's Armies in Moscow , when lack of supplies and hostile weather  destroyed troops. However, the experience and the tactics of battle hardened Sri Lanka army soldiers were beyond the capacity of such analysts . The soldiers have turned the hostile weather to their advantage while the terrorists have been hoisted with their own petard - Pix by Rukaml Gamage
